Liberty of the Seas is the second ship in Royal
Caribbean's Freedom class.  Her sister ships are
Freedom of the Seas and Independence of the
Seas.  Until fleetmate Oasis of the Seas entered
service in 2009, these ships were the largest
cruise ships ever built.  They remain quite large
relative to most other cruise ships.

The Freedom class is an extended  version of
Royal Caribbean's Voyager class. (See
Adventure of the Seas, Explorer of the Seas, and
Navigator of the Seas).  Not only bigger than the
Voyagers, the Freedom class have more features
such as the Flow Rider Surfing Simulator and
more venues such as Sorrentos and On The Air.

      There is little technological difference
between Liberty and sister ships Freedom of the
Seas and Independence of the Seas.  However,
RCI has striven to ensure that Liberty is not
simply a clone of Freedom.  Many of the venues
on the two ships have different names.
Furthermore, the interior decor and artwork of
Liberty are less flamboyant than on Freedom.
There are no giant figures hanging from the
ceiling of the Royal Promenade interior mall.
There are no jet aircraft ascending the atria.
Liberty’s colors are muted yellows and tans.
Similarly, the decor of Independence, which is
targeted to the British market, is different than
that of Liberty.

In 2011, Liberty underwent an extensive refit
in which she was enhanced with several of the
features that have proven popular on the Oasis-
class ships.  These included physical
enhancements such as adding The Cupcake
Cupboard to the Royal Promenade and
programming enhancements such as The
Dreamworks Experience.  The latter involves
characters from the popular Dreamworks movies
participating in certain onboard activities and the
showing of 3-D versions of the movies in the
ship's theater.   In addition, a large outdoor
movie screen was added to Liberty's main pool
area.

RCI targets its offerings to couples and
singles in their 30s to 50s with a median-age in
the low 40s.  In addition, the line actively courts
families.  Considering that so many of the
amenities and programs are geared toward
physical activity, people with an active lifestyle
are most likely to enjoy this ship.  However,
there is such a variety of entertainment offerings
that there is plenty to do for those who prefer just
to relax.

The atmosphere is casual, undemanding and
fun.  On formal nights even in the Caribbean,
however, there are a fair number of people in
tuxedos or gowns although most opt for jacket
and tie or a nice dress.

In 2011, Liberty dramatically changed her
schedule, leaving the Caribbean to spend her first
summer season in Europe, sailing Mediterranean
cruises from Barcelona, Spain.  Her winter
schedule calls for her to do four and five day
cruises from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

AND
COMMENTARY
Running down the center of the ship is
The
Royal Promenade.  Longer than
a football field and four decks high, it
has shops, restaurants, bars and
entertainment facilities.  Seemingly,
something is always happening in the
Royal Promenade.  At either end it is
bounded by multi-story atria called
"centrums."  Above: The Royal
Promenade from the aft or main
centrum.  Below:  A street-level view.

guests at the end of a cruise.
Liberty has an extensive collection of mostly contemporary
works of art.  These include large installations, statues,
photographs, paintings and other media.  As a sign
onboard the ship explains, these works are linked by a
common theme: "Illusion or reality? The art onboard
Liberty of the Seas is pure imagination.  Perception and
preconception are a matter of how you look at things.
Throughout the ship we have collected artwork that
challenges our perception of the visual world.  The reality
of our everyday life has been subjected to interpretation by
artists from all over the world, resulting in a surreal
depiction of what we normally perceive."
Interactive signs posted around
the ship tell guests what
activities are happening, what's
for dinner and where they are.

A feature of the Royal

ships is a classic car parked in
