Princess Cruises began in 1965 and has grown to be one of the larger and most
popular lines. Its ships cruise to all seven continents offering itineraries that range
from seven to 102 days.
While the line's fleet includes several smaller ships, the mainstay is the Grand-class
ships of over 110,000 tons. These ships are modern and sophisticated.
Princess seeks to offer its passengers numerous options so that they can design
their own cruise experiences. Accordingly, the larger ships are divided into numerous
venues offering different style entertainment and/or dining options. The idea is that not
everyone has the same tastes and will seek out the venues most attuned to their
personal preferences. This also helps to give the big ships more of an intimate feel
and to prevent crowding.
The lifestyle on Princess is more casual than on sister companies P&O Cruises and
Cunard Line but still offers a taste of luxury. In some of its brochures, it describes it
as "American-style luxury."
Princess first came to worldwide attention as the setting for the television series
"Love Boat". It continues this tradition with its own "Department of Romance".
