PORTS OF CALL
Main Street in Downtown Charlotte Amalie.
SHOPPING AND
GETTING AROUND
SHOPPING   St. Thomas has three major shopping areas for
cruise passengers.

Downtown Charlotte Amalie has some 300 stores in the area
between Main Street (sometimes referred to as Dronnigens
Gade) and Waterfront Highway (sometimes referred to as
Veteran's Drive).  These include numerous jewelry, fashion and
souvenir shops.

Also, in downtown is Vendors Plaza, where is an open air
market.

The
Havensight Mall has over 100 stores including branches of
some of the chain stores found downtown.   As with downtown,
there are also restaurants, bars and entertainment venues.

Adjoining Havensight is the Yacht Haven Mall.  The shops here
are high end luxury venues, most of which bear internationally
known names.

Crown Bay has a smaller shopping mall.  Once again, there are
branches of some of the chain stores that have their main
location downtown.

GETTING AROUND

The most common way of getting around on St. Thomas
is by taxi.  Most taxis are open-air vehicles called
"safaris."  However, there are some vans and passenger
cars that are used as taxis.

The taxis are shared use.  Thus, the driver may wait for
other passengers or scout for additional passengers
along the way.

Fares are regulated by the government.  Tipping is
common.

Both pedestrians and people who are thinking of renting
a car should keep in mind that vehicles drive on the left
side of the road in the British manner.  However, the
steering wheel on the vehicles is typically located as in
a car in the mainland United States.

Also, the roads outside of Charlotte Amalie are often
quite steep and narrow with sharp turns.  As a result,
both driving (and riding) can be challenging.

A wide and often picturesque sidewalk has been
constructed along the shore between Downtown
Charlotte Amalie and Havensight.  This makes for a
pleasant walk on a sunny day.
