DINING
Freestyle cruising is often associated with dining. As NCL puts it: "Freestyle Dining lets you make
your own dining decisions throughout the cruise." Pearl has numerous dining venues so where to eat
is up to each passenger. Also, since there are no assigned tables or dining times, when to eat is also
up to the individual passenger.
The Pearl has two main dining rooms. The Summer Palace
Main Dining Room, is the more formal of the two and the line
recommends it for those who wish to participate in the optional
formal nights. This is a large room (capacity 558) done in a style
evocative of the Russian Tsars. It has large windows overlooking
the ship's stern, which let in lots of natural light during the day.
The Indigo Main
Dining Room is
done in a minimalist
style recalling
modern boutique
hotels. It is smaller
than the Summer
Palace with a
capacity of 304
seats. The chef's
specials include
light and healthy
dishes.
Le Birstro is an elegant French-style restaurant. (Menu) In addition to what may be the best food on the ship, this venue offers the
unique experience of being able to dine beneath an original Impressionist masterpiece. It only seats 129 and reservations are a
good idea There is a cover charge for this venue but it is small compared to what one is getting.
Another contender for best food on the ship is Cagney's Steakhouse, located high on Deck 13 (seats 176). (Menu). During the
day, it provides breakfast and lunch to guests in the concierge level accommodations. In the evenings, it is open to all. There is an
extra charge for this venue.
The Lotus Garden is a complex of
Asian restaurants on Deck 7. The
main section of the restaurant seats
162 and serves a menu that combines
Japanese, Thai and Chinese cooking.
(above left). In The Teppanyaki
Room (above right), guests sit in
horsehoe-shaped tables of 10 while
the chef prepares the meal. Also
included in the complex is the Sushi
and Sashimi Bar, which has an ala
carte priced menu. (left and right).
On the balconies
overlooking the
main lobby are two
restaurants.
Mambo's offers
Tex/Mex cusine and
Latin-inspired
tappas (left). There
is a $10 extra
charge for this
venue.
The Blue Lagoon
(right) offers
"comfort food"
including
hamburgers, light
fare and snacks.
La Cucina is a family-style Italian restaurant done. (Menu).
A $10 cover charge applies to this venue.
The Garden Café isa self-service buffet with a variety of stations including
Indian food, roasts, hamburgers, ice cream and desserts. Once a cruise, the ship's
dessert specialists create a late-night Choco-loic buffet during which the lights are
dimmed and dramatic lighting shined on the various desserts. It recalls the
midnight buffets which were once a highlight of an ocean cruise.
If one wants to dine outdoors, Pearl offers several choices. The
aptly-named Great Outdoors (above left) overlooks the ship's
stern. The Sky High Bar and Grill on Deck 13 (above) is
decorated to look like the basket of a hot air balloon. It "hovers"
over the forward end of the main pool area. At the other end of
the pool area is Topsiders Bar and Grill (left).

To help with these decisions, display
screens are located in the public areas
showing how busy each dining venue is
at that moment. In addition, there are
several locations around the ship for
making dining reservations.
