Quantcast
OVERVIEW

Norwegian Pearl is the third ship in Norwegian’s Jewel
class of ships.  Her sisters include Norwegian Jewel (
see
profile) and Norwegian Gem (see profile) as well as
Norwegian Jade, which originally entered service as Pride
of Hawaii.

Like her sisters, the Pearl was built, largely indoors, at the
Meyer Werft shipyards in Papenberg, Germany in 67 pre-
assembled blocks.  She was given a diesel electric power
plant to drive her azipod propulsion system and three
powerful bow thrusters.  The final result was a highly
maneuverable ship capable of 25 knots, which is faster than
most cruise ships.   She also has a deeper draft than most
cruise ships, making her more stable in rough seas.

The overall interior layout of the Pearl is similar to her
sisters.  However, there are enough differences in the décor
and in the amenities to let the ship reflect her own unique
identity

The ship is clean and well-maintained.  This is an
indication of good crew morale, which is also reflected in
the friendliness of the crew.  While the name on the ship’s
side proclaims her Norwegian, the officers and crew are
from some 70 nations.

Norwegian Pearl was built with N
orwegian’s Freestyle
cruising in mind.  The centerpiece of that concept is
customer choice - - giving the guests the freedom to
structure his or her own vacation.  Accordingly, the Pearl
was built with several dining venues, several entertainment
venues and a variety of types of accommodations.

The Pearl has been featured in television programs
including an episode of the Travel Channel’s “Great
Cruises” and a CNBC documentary about the cruise
industry: “Cruise Inc. - - Big Money on the High Seas.”
Such media attention gives an indication of the quality of
her operation.  She was named one of the top large cruise
ships in Conde Nast Traveler’s 8th Annual Reader’s Poll
and as “Best Cruise Ship for Families” in the 2008
TravelAge West WAVE Editor's Pick Awards..

The Pearl spends the summer months cruising out of Seattle
to Alaska.   She then does a long re-positioning cruise
through the Panama Canal and takes up residence in Miami,
where she does Caribbean cruises.

There is an extensive array
of accommodations on the

cabins to lavish villas.   Seen

comfortable balcony in the
latter cabin was equipped

main lobby on the Pearl.  It is two decks
high and is dominated by a large video
screen, which is used for showing
pictures, videos and for play utilizing a
Nintendo Wii.  In the evenings, there is
also live music in the lobby.
The crystal in the Crystal Atrium is

Tower', a sculpture made of blown glass.
Many ships have extensive art
collections that include important
works.  However, one painting sets
Pearl's collection in an altogether
different category.  It is an original
oil painting by French Impressionist
master Pierre August Renoir (right).
This type of painting is usually only
seen in the world's top museums but
guests on the Pearl can not only look
at it but dine next to it in one of the
ship's specialty restaurants.

There are other interesting works on
the Pearl including a variety of Asian
and contemporary works.
