MSC Cruises is the fourth largest independent cruise line. It is a
subsidiary of the Mediterraean Shipping Company, the world's second
largest container ship company.
Mediterraena Shipping Company entered the cruise industry in the
late 1980s. The objective was to offer affordable cruises to European
holiday makers. It acquired the Lauro Line in 1989, which it operated
as Star Lauro. In 1995, the company's name was changed to MSC
Early in the new Millennium, MSC tokk a major change of course
both with regard to the type of cruise it offered and its fleet. The
objective changed to providing premium cruises, first in Europe but
also in the Americas, Africa and elsewhere.
MSC began a rapid increase in the size of its fleet. It acquired two
new ships that had been ordered by the now defunct Festival Cruises.
In addition, it commenced building a series of ships that were built
especially for MSC. The result is that by 2010, its fleet had grown to
eleven ships, only one of which was more than a decade old.
The result of this expansion program is that MSC has become a
household name in Europe. It now carries more than 1.2 million
passengers a year.
MSC emphasizes its Italian heritage, which is reflected in the sleek,
contemporary designs of its ships and in the style of its cruise
experience. However, the line caters to an international market with
passengers coming from many countries in Europe and the Americas.
MSC ships sail year-round in the Medditeranean and seasonally in
Northern Europe, North America, South America, and South Africa.
