OVERVIEW:  The first impression one gets when seeing
LIBERTY OF THE SEAS is how overwhelmingly big this ship is.
While many of today’s large cruise ships look as big as a building,
LIBERTY looks like a block of buildings.  Her rectangular shape,
topped here and there by an angular funnel, a mast, and other
structures on the top deck, add to this look.  This sense of bigness is
no illusion as LIBERTY, along with her sister ship FREEDOM OF
THE SEAS, is the biggest passenger ship in the world in terms of gross
tonnage.
There is little technological difference between LIBERTY and
FREEDOM.  However, RCI has striven to ensure that LIBERTY is
not simply a clone of FREEDOM.  While LIBERTY has all of the
classic RCI amenities (e.g., a rock climbing wall, an ice skating rink) as
well as the innovations that debuted on FREEDOM (e.g., boxing ring,
surfing simulator), the interior decor and artwork are less shock and
awe than on FREEDOM.  There are no giant figures hanging from the
ceiling of the Royal Promenade interior mall.  There are no jet aircraft
ascending the atrium. The ship’s colors are muted yellows and tans.  It
has a sedate corporate feel, a somewhat more mature, restful
atmosphere.
RCI has also distinguished LIBERTY by debuting some new programs
on this ship.  For example, there is an integrated health and wellness
program that combines exercise, diet, lectures, spa treatments,
acupuncture and shore excursions.  Also, there will be an enhanced
wedding program that will allow couples to take or renew vows by the
side of the surfing simulator or on shoreside excursions to volcanoes,
glaciers, and other interesting venues that may be on the ship’s
itinerary.  For younger voyagers, there will be a children’s cooking
program and a children’s woodworking program.  RCI plans to
expand these programs throughout its fleet but they will begin here.

PASSENGERS: RCI targets its offerings to couples and singles in
their 30s to 50s with a median-age in the low 40s.  In addition, the line
actively courts families.  Considering that so many of the amenities and
programs are geared toward physical activity, people with an active
lifestyle are most likely to enjoy this ship.  However, there is such a
variety of entertainment offerings that there is plenty to do for those
who prefer to sit and watch.   The atmosphere is casual, undemanding
and fun.

TOUR AND COMMENTARY
Above: The Royal Promenade is a
shopping, dining and entertainment
mall that is longer than a football field
and four decks high. Below: At either
end of the Royal Promenade are
multi-story atria. The aft atrium
features artwork by Miguel Chevalier,
which uses light projectors and
motion senors so that the sculpture's
colors change as people move by.
