Quantcast
Zuiderdam was the first Vista class ship built by
Fincantieri for Holland America Line.  This design
was so successful that the design has been used as
the basis for ships in the fleets of Cunard, Costa,
and P&O Cruises.  Holland America has built three
more Vistas (Osterdam,
Westerdam and Noordam)
as well as two enhanced versions (
Eurodam and
Nieuw Amsterdam), which the line calls its
Signature class.

Although the design is the same as a number of
other ships, Zuiderdam is very much an individual.
For example, the decor of the ship is brighter and
uses more bold colors than in her sisters.  There is
still the overall sophistication that is a key element
of the Holland America experience but Zuiderdam
comes across as more lively than some of her
fleetmates.

Perhaps as a result of the decor but more likely
because of the personnel, Zuiderdam has an active
atmosphere.  There is a lot on the program and the
crew conduct themselves like they are genuinely
pleased to be there.

Turning to the technical side, Zuiderdam was built
with five diesel generators and one gas turbine.  The
gas turbine reduces emissions and thus enables the
ship to more easily meet the strict standards laid
down for Alaska cruising.

Zuiderdam currently does Alaska cruises during the
summer months.  When the weather turns too cold
up there, Zuiderdam shifts to Florida where she
does Caribbean cruises including partial transits of
the Panama Canal.

A cultured atmosphere is an important aspect of the Holland America
experience and so Zuiderdam, like the other HAL ships, has an extensive,
high quality art collection.  The works are not arrayed gallery style but
rather serve as they were intended as part of the living environment.  T
he
works
on Zuiderdam include traditional European and Asian works as
well as contemporary pieces.  Also keeping with HAL tradition,

Zuiderdam
has a series of paintings of HAL ships by marine artist
Stephen Card.
