Statendam was the first of four ships built in Holland America's
S-class. (See also sister ship Veendam). She was also the first ship
built for HAL after Carnival Corporation acquired the line. At the
time, they were considered large ships but are now thought of as
HAL's small ships even though they are over 50,000 gross tons.
HAL has consistently upgraded the ships in the fleet so that guests
who have traveled on the newest ships in the fleet will encounter
most of the same features when they travel on the older ships. Of
course, since the ships are different sizes, the features are set to scale.
Statendam has an excellent art collection that cost over $2 million.
With the theme of "Dutch life and Exploration," one naturally expects
Dutch art. However, there are also works from Africa and Asia in
the collection. Statendam also has a collection of marine art by
Captain Stephen Card depicting past HAL ships that carried the
Statendam name.
While Statendam conveys the impression of being very traditional,
the decor is actually rather contemporary in design. There is use of
rich fabrics and wood paneling but it is streamlined rather than ornate.
Statendam follows a varied schedule that takes her all over the
world. However, in 2009, she will be doing cruises in Alaska, the
West Coast of the United States and Mexico, and in the Caribbean.
Since the cruises tend to be longer than average, the majority of
passengers are older. In addition, most passengers are American or
Canadian.
