WINING AND
DINING
Confectionery and chocolate creations at the Grand Buffet
held once a voyage in the Mediterranean Restaurant.
The Pacific Dining Room
The Atlantic Dining Room
A table for eight in the Pacific Dining
Room.
The Ionian Room has perhaps the
most sophisticated atmosphere of any
of the rooms on the ship.  It is
decorated with wood paneling, Greek
vases, and leather armchairs.  In the
evenings, a jazz ensemble plays.  The
only drawback is the clouds of cigar
smoke that drift around this large
room.
Seventh Sea Bar is located in the central atrium of
the ship.   With the Purser's desk and the Tour office
located nearby and the glass elevators ascending
and descending the atrium, there is a great deal of
life to this place.  Yet, it is not overly noisy or
crowded.  At various times, a pianist or a classical
trio plays behind the bar.  It is also used for cruise
staff activities such as trivia and Name That Tune.
The most shock and awe decoration in the ship is in
the Black & Red Seas room with its overpowering red.
Somewhat incongruously, the entertainment in here
was provided by a singer with an acoustic guitar.
Club Arctic is the ship's disco.  Very
loud and very popular.  It has adults
only hours as well as time set aside
for teens.
The Irish Sea Bar is a piano bar where
patrons can gather around a circular
bench decorated with piano keys and
sing along with the pianist who sits in
the center,
Coral Sea Cafe is a coffee bar where
one can purchase gourmet coffees
and cakes for an extra charge.
DINING  When it comes to dining, the
VICTORY follows a modified traditional
approach.  The passengers are assigned
to a table in one of the two main dining
rooms where  they will be served dinner
provided that they appear at the
assigned time.   The other meals are on
an open-seating system with one of the
assistant restaurant mangers assigning
tables as passengers appear.
The two main dining rooms in the
VICTORY are The Pacific Dining
Room, which is at the stern, and The
Atlantic Dining Room, which is more
amidships.  For those who are sensitive
to ship movement, the Atlantic may be
slightly better as the stern of a ship tends
to bounce around more than the middle.
However, given the VICTORY's
itinerary takes her through generally calm
seas, motion should not be a problem in
either restaurant.    Both dining rooms
are two decks high and are similarly
decorated. While the Atlantic has a more
spectacular staircase, the Pacific seems
to be a brighter room probably due to
the windows along the back.  The
Pacific is used for all three meals while
the Atlantic does not open at sea during
the day except for afternoon tea.
As on most modern ships, one can
forego the main dining room altogether
and eat at a variety of alternative venues.
Chief among these is the Mediterranean
Restaurant, which is the ship's
self-service food court.  This is a very
popular area located near the pools and
the open deck space on Lido and
Panorama decks.  It can be very
crowded.
Part of this complex is the ship's 24-hour
pizza venue, the Arno pizzeria.  This may
well be the best pizza at sea.  But, then
taste in pizza, like romance, is a very
personal thing.  There are some tables
nearby overlooking the stern of the ship
that offer spectacular views.  A
drawback for some and a plus for others
is that these tables are next to the Sirens'
Pools which is very popular with children.
The staff is zealous about keeping the
self-serve areas clean and well-policed.
One traveler went through the lines at the
Mediterranean, selected a number of
dishes, found a table and then went off
to obtain a beverage from one of the
stations where water and juice are
dispensed on a 24-hour basis.  She
returned to find that her heretofore
untouched lunch tray was gone, swept
away into the bins by an overly
enthusiastic staffer.
Food on the VICTORY was somewhat
uneven.  Mass market dishes such as
hamburgers and pizza were very good.
Dishes that were somewhat more
adventuresome were less dependable.
Of course, passengers could have as
much as they wanted of the food.  Thus,
on the lobster night, one could also order
a steak to make a Surf and Turf.
However, the kitchen serves 1,500 main
courses in less than 25 minutes and thus
one cannot reasonably expect
made-to-order meals.  Consequently,
using the Surf and Turf example above,
the waiter will bring you a plate with a
lobster meal on it and a plate with a
steak meal on it and it is up to you to
combine them.
Service in the dining rooms was good
but not especially spirited.  One night
there was a waiters parade which also
included singing and dancing.  Some of
the waiters climbed up onto the serving
stations to dance while others seemed to
disappear into the kitchen.

BARS AND LOUNGES  The
VICTORY has a bar or lounge for every
taste.  In addition to the rooms that are
set aside for the purpose, there are a
number of smaller bars that are part of
areas such as the Casino or the pool
areas.  The drink prices are reasonable.

ACCOMMODATIONS  VICTORY
has 1,379 staterooms including 8
penthouses, 42 suites, 14 demi-suites,
458 balcony staterooms, 327 outside
staterooms with no balcony and 530
inside cabins.
The staterooms are relatively spacious
and comfortable.  They are not
luxurious.  However, they are not
spartan either.  Think in terms of a good
three-star, possibly four star, hotel.
The Carnival Comfort beds are well
named and provide a good venue for
sleeping or watching the large television.
A nice touch is the basket of samples in
the bathroom.  It included disposable
razors, toothpaste, and various other
items including a romance novel.

The galley on CARNIVAL VICTORY is
larger than the ship's engine room.  It
is populated by 120 cooks and 70
galley stewards and provision
staffers.  During dinner, one plate per
second leaves the galley to be served.
The Grand Buffet in the Mediterranean Restaurant is decorated
with ice sculptures and creations made of butter and other food
stuffs.  A special viewing period is set aside during which
passengers can photograph or just ogle these displays before the
hungry horde devours them.   This viewing is quite popular and
can be very crowded.
Carnival Comfort beds can be put
together to form a king-size bed, in
this case, occupied by a towel animal.
